Monday and Tuesday of this week I attended a workshop for LETRS for the THRID time in my four years as a teacher in Caddo. This time, the workshop was supposed to focus primarily on Early Childhood and teach us the best way to support of young learners because it has been redesigned to be able to be taught on a Pre-K level. After the first day I thought, "Ok, tomorrow I'll learn something new..." After the second day I left thinking that the district really wasted their money having me go through this training again because nothing really changed about the curriculum. All I can see is that they added new statistics but they were still things as teachers we already know. I would have much rather have attended a Frog Street Press workshop...... They are fun and you REALLY leave with a lot of information and ideas that you can easily incorporate into your classroom.
Yesterday I attended a workshop for Everyday Calendar Counts. This will be the first year my school uses Calendar Math for Pre-K. I was surprised to discover that this curriculum has been around for about 10 years because they only ever advertise K-5th grade. I thought that I would not like this curriculum but after it was presented, I am excited to initiate it. I love how it incorporates Math into the curriculum not only during calendar time but the activates extend to small groups to help reinforce math skills. The only thing I see that I don’t like about the curriculum is how much space it will take on the bulletin board.
